Greetings fellow riders, August has flown by, as most months seem to do these days. With preparations for Wing Ding and other activities going on, time has really passed quickly. Speaking of Wing Ding, it is just around the corner. We hope all of you are making plans to attend. There are going to be lots of great activities going on, and of course, lots of vendors to see and hopefully buy from. This is a great time to get all of those “special goodies” you have had your eye on. We hope everyone gets a chance to attend, at least for a day or two, and have a great time right here in Alabama.

ALABAMA DISTRICT PICNIC
Speaking of August, we had our annual District Picnic at the Confederate Memorial Park in Marbury on the 8th. Even though it was a bit warm, everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. We were certainly happy to announce, toward the end of the day, that every chapter in Alabama was represented. This was a proud moment for us and for the entire District Team and we hope a proud moment for all who attended. With lots of food, lots of fun, lots of prizes (including some cash) and most importantly, lots of time to spend with friends. We are already thinking about next year and the possibility of moving the picnic to a cooler time during the year. We will keep everyone apprised of this forthcoming decision.
After Wing Ding is over the next Region A events are the Mississippi District Rally and the Region A rally in October. We hope you are already making plans to attend both of these great events. Should be lots of fun at both so don’t miss out
Finally, please remember all of our men and women in uniform, and their families, who work each day to protect our way of life and also all of our first responders who work every day to help take care and protect us and their families also. We hope to see all of you out on the road,
INTERNATIONAL COUPLE OF YEAR SELECTION
It is September and time for Wing Ding 2016. It is shaping up to be a good one. As always, there will be plenty to see and do; but one of the Main events will be the Couple of the Year selection on Wednesday, September 2nd. Dewey and Alice Cole will be representing Region A and a fine couple they are. These two have been on the road visiting chapters, District and Region events. If you remember, Alice fell in Mobile in 2014 and broke her hip. She made it home and had surgery shortly thereafter. The only thing that limited her was the fact she couldn’t ride the motorcycle but that didn’t slow her down or dampen her enthusiasm. She bounced right back and has been going wide open. If you have the opportunity, please make plans to be at the selection on Wednesday at 1:30pm. Dewey and Alice, in my opinion, are going to make a great International Couple of the Year, and we need to support them by being there for them.
TICKETS!! TICKETS!! COME AN GET 'EM!!!
Region A is doing the Ticket sales again this year.
Alabama is in charge of Thursday, September 3rd, and we will need your help. Please come by and lend a hand by helping sell tickets. You will get to meet people from all over the United States and the world.
We look forward to seeing you there. Have a safe trip as you travel to Huntsville.
SAADD GREETINGS to all!
This has been a very busy month for many of us as we have had several gatherings, picnics, rides and adventures that have made memories for a life time. What a wonderful experience and a wonderful thing to have happen to each of us where we always have something to do or some place to go for fun. Our GWRRA chapters, friends and families keep us on the move and that is GREAT! All I can say is we are blessed blessed, blessed to be HAPPY, HAPPY, HAPPY!!
Our District Picnic at the Confederate Memorial Park was awesome! We had good attendance, GREAT food and wonderful fellowship with friends and family from every chapter in our district! What a great experience and even the weather was good for the picnic although some of us got hammered with rain, wind and lightening on the way home. I am happy to report that all made it home safely as far as I know. I know our Chapter A group did and we had it! Scary at times but safe and that’s the main thing. As I know you all know, NEVER TAKE UNNECESSARY CHANCES AND ALWAYS ERR ON THE SIDE OF SAFETY!
I know many of you have heard of some of the physical issues Gladys and Paul Luker, CD’s of Chapter L in the Monroeville area have experienced recently. I’m happy to report that we went to their meeting this month, the first one they have had in a couple of months and they had a great crowd and a great meeting. Physically they are doing wonderfully well and we continue to have them in our thoughts and prayers for complete recovery. Gladys has said they are going to Wing Ding and she hopes they can make it on the bike. YAY!!! We do too!
Remember that GWRRA is a wonderful association and we want all “good folks” to be part of our great family. Share your calendars and your experiences and feel free to call me or Kathy anytime if we can assist in some way with you. Use those beautiful Gold Wing motorcycles and others to enrich your life and strengthen your GW family ties and relationships and make more memories of a lifetime! You deserve it! We look forward to many more miles of riding pleasure with all of you and please, be safe out there. That’s the only way we can continue to make it fun.
Safety Weekend Registration
I hope everyone is planning to participate in Wing Ding here in Huntsville for all of the FUN, Frivolity. Education, Vendors, Fun, Entertainment, Reunions, and all other facets of this event. If you are unable to make it to Wing Ding, or even if you are coming, but want to occupy yourself with some of the many other activities, we are rapidly approaching our very own Rider Education Weekend on 3 and 4 October in Lincoln, Alabama. We have lots of members signed up to take Rider Courses and Medic/First Aid, but we are still accepting registrations.
I need to clarify the courses we plan to offer at the Rider Education Weekend. Both the Trailering Course (two wheeled) and the Trike Trailering Course include a range portion pulling a trailer; they also automatically count as an update to your Advanced Rider Course (ARC) or Trike Rider Course (TRC) for the Levels Program. You do not need to take both the ARC and the TC, nor the TRC and TTRC. With that said, if you pull a trailer, I would encourage you to bring it and take the appropriate riding course. If you have registered for both, I have tried to catch it and only enter the trailering version for the course enrollment.
I hope all of you are thinking about safety every time you get on your bike or in your car. I don't mean to be paranoid, I simply mean taking reasonable prudent measures to ensure your journey is a safe one. Even cars and trucks require their own version of a T-CLOCS.
Click on any of the following links to download GWRRA's official T-CLOCS check list:
For your car or truck, consult your owner's manual. It may not be identical to one of these, but it should cover the same basics: Tires, Controls, Lights, Oils (and other liquids), and Chassis. Please, we would like to see you travel safely, do your vehicle check before traveling.
Ride safely, ride often, call a friend.
Well August came and went in a hurry. Seems like we just had the District Picnic last week. I think we had a good turnout. Every chapter in the district was represented. That may have been a first. Was a little on the warm side but fun was had by all.
It is just a few days till Wing Ding will be in Huntsville right in our back yard so I expect to see a lot you Alabama folks there. Remember we have ticket sales and poker run on Thursday; if you would like to help out a couple of hours or so, please come by and do so. You MEC’s check in with John at the MEC table to see if he needs help. That is a good time to recruit a lot of new folks. Most all the District Recruiters of the Year do it at Wing Ding.
Safety Weekend will be coming up the first week end in October. You need to preregister; you can do it on line from any of the Chapter or District web site. Even if your web page is not up to date or being used, the links are still there and will work. Again this will be at the Honda MFG. plant in Lincoln, AL. Exit 165 north of I 20. This is all free to GWRRA members in Alabama.
I guess you all know by now that I hate doing newsletter articles. I can think of a thousand things to say till I set down to do it then it’s like I hitting the reformat button on a hard drive. All information is gone.
See you at Wing Ding!
We thoroughly enjoyed visiting with all of you at the Alabama District Picnic, we got two treats in one that day. First we got to see a large group we consider our friends, then we got to ride our Gold Wings for a few miles. Admittedly we got wet on the ride home, but after the rain passed the ride was a lot cooler, the wet clothing acting like a full-body cooling vest for evaporative cooling.
For our Chapter H meeting this month we would like to thank the visitors from Chapters B, D, S, and T; we had 29 visitors at our chapter meeting, WOW. The restaurant was almost as thrilled as we were, and made the allowances necessary to fit everyone into our room for the meeting. It is not very often we get five Chapter Directors at one meeting outside of a rally.
One of my favorite features of this association is the feeling of family that exists throughout the organization. This is something that some do not see, and most cannot describe, but it exists. To us that is what the "Chapter Life" we hear about really means. It is the way a Chapter, District, Region, or the whole of GWRRA acts as a family, especially in time of crisis. A family pulls together in the face of adversity, instead of everyone only being concerned with themselves and what they want.
Don't forget that Wing Ding will be here in Huntsville 3 thru 6 September; come and meet more of our extended Family. Also, don't forget that the Alabama 2013 and Region A 2014 Couple of the Year will be competing for the 2015 International Couple of the Year. Come and show your support for Dewy and Alice Cole in this competition.

The Classic Wing SIG is for discussions relating to vintage and early model Gold Wings: GL1000, GL1100, and GL1200. Camping/RV SIG – We have many camping enthusiasts in GWRRA, and this group will meet on Sunday, September 6 at 8:30 am. They will discuss the topics that pertain to all campers (trailers, 5th wheels, to all sizes of drive-ables) including set up, living comfortably, storage, breakdown and all things in between. The seminar will also incorporate various ways to bring along your motorcycle.
These are just a FEW of the many great things that are happening at Wing Ding this year. There’s so much going on that we can’t list it all.
