District News
  -- District Director

November, 2014.

We have just gotten back from the Mississippi District Rally, and what a great time everyone had.  A great BIG THANK YOU to all the Alabama members who attended their event this year. Alabama was the largest pre-registered district in attendance. At closing ceremonies, Bobby & Lori Bryant stepped down and Harry & Diane Schaffer became the new District Directors for Mississippi. They have a new staff, and we wish them well as they move GWRRA in Mississippi forward.
November 11th is the day we remember our veterans who have sacrificed so much for the freedoms we enjoy each day. The Veterans Day Parade is November 11th, and as soon as final plans are made, we will get that information out.
As most of you are aware, Jim Marlow the Assistant Chapter Director for Al-D passed away. I am including Jim’s last newsletter article for all to read. and I ask that each Chapter Director read and share it at their next meeting. It is what GWRRA is really all about.

Well where do I begin, as most of you know by now I have been diagnosed with terminal cancer. I have been fighting this for about two years now and it just doesn’t seem like it wants me to beat it. I fought hard but you can fight something for so long and you get tired, and I am worn out. So I guess I have to face reality, I have to say, this will most likely be my last words of wisdom to you.  As some of you know and most don’t, I joined this organization in 2009 not knowing for sure what I was getting involved with, but giving it a shot anyway.  During that time I managed to make four Wing Ding’s, four District Conventions, four Region Conventions, one Georgia Convention, one South Carolina Convention, one Florida Convention, and three Mississippi Conventions with a Louisiana Convention thrown in for more fun. I must say that there are a lot of fine folks in this organization and if you don’t get out and meet them, you’ve lost the whole concept of what this organization is about and a lot of great people!
During the first three years I attempted to make every event that was planned. Having made those events made possible many friendships, friendships that are rarely found in other organizations or clubs, this is what this organization is about, making FRIENDS! Somewhere along the way Ron even talked me into being your Assistant Chapter Director (I can’t count how many times I told him NO!) He did it with my saying NO, I might have said “ah alright”.  Now if I can do that, I know that each one of you could and should try it. Who knows you may enjoy it, and I assure you that you will have FUN doing it. Thinking about it, he talked me into a lot of things! We won’t go into all that I talked him into. It was fun, actually great fun at times.
During the last two years I have found that I have more friends than I thought I did, as you were and are there for me when I need you the most.
In closing, my only suggestion or advice to you is; get out while you can, enjoy the camaraderie, the sights these United States have to offer and most of all enjoy what you have today as you don’t know what tomorrow holds for you.
It’s been one heck of a ride and know I enjoyed it all.
Ride Safe & Ride Like You’re Invisible!!
Jim Marlow

We hope you all have a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving Holiday.
Thanks for all you do,

Robert & Gail Brown

District News
  -- Central Assistant District Director

Greetings fellow riders, Like most months these days October is flying by. There have been lots of activities going on in Alabama and we hope you have had an opportunity to participate. This past weekend was the Mississippi District Rally in Gulfport. We didn’t get to attend this year but in talking to several folks who made the trip, it was a great time. Mother Nature certainly provided some wonderful for the rally and for all of us stuck at home. We hope you are getting a chance to get out and enjoy, during what we think is the best time of year, riding around this wonderful state and region.
Halloween is just around the corner and we hope you and yours have a great and safe time. District rally’s are over for us in the southeast until next Feb. We hope everyone has had a great year and had the opportunity to get out and visit with our fellow members from other districts. We have had some great rallies this year and look forward to another great year next year. The annual Veterans Day Parade in Birmingham (the largest in the nation each year) is coming up on November 11th. Alabama GWRRA has a place in the parade and we encourage each of you who can make it to join us that Tuesday to salute all of our veterans and thank them for their dedicated service to us and to our country. As of this writing we have not received final details but when we do they will be posted on the district website and sent to all chapter directors in the district. We hope to see a great turnout of goldwings for this event.
In closing, we lost one of our great friends this past month, a long time GWRRA member, Jimmy Marlow, from Chapter D in Anniston, Al. There will be a memorial service at the family home on October 28th. Your Chapter Director has details if you would like to attend. You will be missed Jimmy.
Please remember to keep all of our men and women in uniform around the world and all of our first responders and their families in your prayers. When you see a veteran or current service member, please stop for a moment and say thank you for your service, it will be appreciated.

Oh what a great activity and riding month we all have had this month.  So much going on and so much to do that it has been hard to decide what comes first.  We participated with the Chapter M folks and the Maggie Valley Ride that Jim and Sue Jackson put together and what a great time!  We saw some sights and had some experiences that will stay with us for a lifetime.  We made some new friends and went some places that we never knew existed.  Special thanks go to Sandy and GG Parker who live in Silverhill AL for making sure we knew about this one and getting us to participate.  We also participated in some great Chapter A rides to Louisiana and what great experiences there too.  We are so fortunate to have our local chapter family to share experiences and fun with and we love you all.
As I write this, Kathy and I just returned from our week of fun with our MS Chapter L family from Laurel MS.  We left with them after the MS Rally in Gulfport MS and we have ridden this whole week through MS, some of GA, some of TN and a lot of KY and now back in AL and man what a time we have had!!  We had great experiences, great riding, great weather and most of all, great friends and family from MS.  Special thanks go out to Kenny and Joanna Williamson of Chapter L for planning this adventure and inviting us to participate.  Once again, memories were made for a lifetime and we love it!!!
We are so proud of our new Region A Couple of the Year, Dewey and Alice Cole.  What a wonderful experience we had with their selection at the Region A Convention in Eufaula last month and what a GREAT COUPLE to represent us this year!  They did a terrific job in their interviews and sharing with the group and we will be excited to see them become the new International Couple of the Year at Wing Ding 37 next year in Huntsville AL.  Make sure you have made plans to attend and support Dewey and Alice in their quest as well as take advantage of the opportunity to have a lot more fun, right here in Alabama.  A number of people have already signed up and made reservations for this event but if you haven’t and want to go, you better get your reservations made soon.  It will be FUN, FUN, FUN so get going and do it with us!
Remember that GWRRA is a wonderful association and we want all “good folks” to be part of our great family.  Share your calendars and your experiences and feel free to call me or Kathy anytime if we can assist in some way with you.  We look forward to many more miles of riding pleasure with all of you and please be safe out there.  That’s the only way we can continue to make it fun.

Well things will be slowing down a bit now that all the Rally/ventions are over.
We wound down with the MS Convention where there were a lot of clowning around going on and everyone having a good time.
At closing Bobby and Lori stepped down as Dist. Dir.’s. They did a great job and will be a hard act to follow.  Harry & Diane Schaffer will be the Dist. Directors and I am sure they will do a great job also.
It is that time of the year when the Chapters should be thinking about their next Couple of the year. This should be someone who is active and helps make the chapter fun. This is an honor to a couple for outstanding achievements to the chapter not a job that they have to do. All a couple has to do is have fun. If they will compete for Dist. COY it will be even more fun.
GWRRA lost a fellow member this month. I lost a dear Friend and I will miss him very much.
James (Jim) Marlow fought a long hard battle with cancer. He was a member and the ACD of Chapter D in Anniston. He was a friend to all that new him and had a heart of gold. RIP my Friend.
Christmas party plans will be made soon I would suggest making it a reunion. All chapters have members on their ARL that no longer ride due to health and or other reasons that were active at one time may even be life members, and then there are the ones that you have never seen at a meeting but have been members for a long time. Invite all the folks to your party bring your picture albums you will be surprised at the memories it will bring back to them. We did this in our Chapter and they had a ball.
Alabama has did a great job in recruiting new members this year but we are still losing more that we gain if you have any ideas to retain members please share with the rest of us. If they are not involved and having fun they don’t want to stick around seems like.
This is getting long so till next month.

Ride safe and have fun.

-- District Couple of the Year

This is a very exciting time for us. Being Alabama District and Region A Couple of the Year has given us the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people and to spread our love of GWRRA and the Couple of the Year program to everyone we meet.
September and October were busy months.  September 25-26-27 we attended North Carolina District Convention at Cherokee.  What a great rally it was with lots to do and lots of vendors.  We enjoyed visiting with friends we had not seen for a while and we made lots of new friends.  October 4th we attended Motorcycle Safety weekend in Lincoln, Alabama.  We learned a lot.  We want to say THANKS to all that worked at making it a successful weekend.  Then October 16-17-18 we were in Gulfport, Mississippi at their District Convention.  CONGRATULATIONS to Harry and Diane Shafer.  They are the new Mississippi District Directors.  We had a great time on the coast.  Weather was perfect and they kept everyone busy with things to do.  We had the opportunity to judge the Bike Show.  Then on the 25th we rode with our Home Chapter "N" to Soda Pop Junction in Tennessee and had lunch and then we rode on to Lawrenceburg, Tennessee  to Amish Country.  The weather was sunny and a good time was had by 13 bikers.  October is coming to a end.  Happy Halloween!  We are hoping to visit some chapters in November.  Looking forward to seeing you all.
