Motorist Awareness Month Activity
As I am sure most of you are aware, the month of May is Motorist Awareness Month in the state of Alabama. Most of you are also aware that our annual Motorist Awareness Day is setting up in the Welcome Centers where the Interstates enter Alabama to try and spread the word to "Share the road safely with motorcycles." Last year our joint efforts resulted in 5,008 contacts with the motoring public across the state, this is highly commendable, and I thank you for your efforts.
This year we will again be manning the Welcome centers, enclosed in this newsletter is a map showing chapter assignments. Our Motorist Awareness day is 18 May 2013. I have attempted to honor all chapter requests, if I have failed it is because of a poor memory, not from a lack of concern. We have the blessing of Ms. Frances Smiley who is the supervisor over all of the Welcome Centers, her phone # is 334-202-2908. I would suggest you have her number with you in case anyone hasn't gotten the word about the event being approved for that day.
I would like to point out that there is nothing limiting us to conducting MAD activities on just that one day, that is just the day that we ask everyone to devote to keeping ourselves and fellow motorcyclist alive. Any such activity on any day is encouraged, it is just that this is the day we have permission to set up in the welcome centers. I would ask that you report all contacts made to the motoring public using the N23 quarterly MAD report. If you wish to have Motorist Awareness material to distribute during your activities, it can be obtained by calling the GWRRA home office at 623-581-2500. I want to stress though that the important statistic I need reported is the number of contacts, not the amount of material distributed.
Thanks for all you do to keep us all safe on the roadway.

Well our first Convention (rally) is behind us and I think we did a pretty good job of making things fun. We learn by doing so next year we will do even better so come join us in Mobile one more time April 3-5 at the Ashbury Inn.
I want to thank all the out of district folks that were judges for the different events, and the entire local volunteer's and Venders that helped to put the show on. We cannot do this without your help and support.
I failed to mention some of the folks that participated in the newsletter and Chapter of the year program. We had Chapter's D, T, Y, & J participating in newsletter and Chapter's B, T, D, & Y participating for chapter of the year. Congratulations to Chapter B of Huntsville as the new chapter of the year, plus also being Region A Chapter of the Year.
I would like to see more chapters competing for both. Gregg Dempsey puts on a very good Chapter of the year seminar if you are thinking of competing attend one of his seminars. All the manuals and score sheets are on line for download at (GWRRA.org) or you can contact me and I will send you the link or the manual or answer questions.
We had 3 folks to renew and 6 new people to join GWRRA at the Rally. Thanks for the folks that helped at the MEC table.
The next Convention will be S.C. in North Charleston I hope to see some of you Alabama folks there as they will be needing volunteers also. April 25th thru 27th. See you there.
Recruiting seems to be up a little from same time last year so keep up the good work.
Thanks for all that you do.

Wow, what a great time we had at the Alabama convention this year. Of course, one of the highlights for us was the Couple of the Year selection. We had three outstanding couples participate this year; Jake & Kathy Lawyer from Chapter B, Larry & Penny Anthony from Chapter T and Dewey & Jan Turner from Chapter Y. Although any of them would make fantastic ambassadors for the District only one could be selected and it was Larry and Penny. Please get out and support them as they travel and prepare to represent Alabama at the Region A selection this September. We would also like to say a special thank you to our judges for the great job they did with such a difficult task. They were; Bob & Jaunee Barrington the 2005/2006 International Couple of the Year, Ken & Julie Zahn former Sr. District Directors for TN., Tommy & Gayle Wilson the current Region N Couple of the Year, and Randall & Janet Drake the Colorado District Directors.
I hope to see a lot of you at the Region A Couple of the Year Rendezvous on the 4th of May at the Spring Creek Resort located near Bainbridge GA. We had a great time last year and expect it to be even better this year. So please come out and have a relaxing weekend and get to know other couples from around the region. In closing we want to thank our outgoing District Couple, Bill and Trina Barden. Alabama was lucky to have such an outstanding couple representing us.
