The more you know the better it gets
Greetings fellow riders, we certainly hope everyone is getting a chance to get out and enjoy the moderate weather we have had lately. Except for the weekends (it seems to rain every weekend) there have been some beautiful days to ride.
We would again like to thank everyone who participated in the February Leadership Training program. We hope all of you gained some new understanding of GWRRA and how it should function. Coming up in August we will have a second round of Leadership Training for 2008. On August 2nd and 3rd we will have a Horizons Class and on August 16th we will conduct our first Advanced Leadership Skills class. For all of you who have completed the first three steps of the Horizons Program we strongly encourage you to attend this class and complete your Program. Both classes will be held at the UAB Medical West Hospital training room in Bessemer, AL. There is no cost for Advanced Leadership Skills and only $10 per person for Horizons. Registration forms are available on the Alabama District website under the Horizons Program logo. If you are going to attend either one of these classes please send this registration form to us ASAP so we can properly prepare for everyone.
Finally, we would like to ask that if you would like to have other classes offered during August or anytime after that please send us an e-mail with your request and we will do all we can to make it happen. We are here to serve you and will make every effort to grant your training request.
We hope to see you out on the road,
Frank & Linda Teasley
Speed defined is:
Speed is what you need to successfully negotiate a curve, after all if you slow down to much you will fall over. Speed it excites us, makes us thrilled to be aboard what ever device we are on at the time. Car, plane boat, and yes even our motorcycles. The problem is that with a car, plane or a boat you can easily be seen unless you are far far away. When you ride a motorcycle though speed becomes more of an enemy then you realize as it distorts car drivers perception. Because of the size of most motorcycles it is hard to judge the speed at which they are approaching you due to the small silhouette that they cast. The car driver sees only your headlight most of the time and by the time they realize they are looking at a headlight, it is too late they've turned left in front of you and you collide. The sad reply is that they did not see you when in truth they saw you they just did not perceive that you were a lot closer and closing a lot faster then they first realized. Now take what I have just written and explain why we are so all fired in a hurry to get from point A to point B, when riding a motorcycle is all about the ride. We as motorcyclist need to slow down and take time to look around this beautiful country of ours and soak in the view from sea to shining sea. We need to be really slow around intersections as they tend to be the most dangerous for car/bike collisions and give that person in the car time to see us instead of trying to go like a streak to beat the yellow light. We need to equip our bikes with headlight modulators so that the pulse can be detected by the car drivers as something other then the headlight of another car. We need to make sure and dress in bright colors and use retro reflective clothing so that we can be seen even easier only then will be begin to realize that being slow and being seen is the right thing to do.
The Alabama District held its first annual Motorist Awareness Ride in on Saturday May 3rd. 2008, unfortunately we did not plan for the severe storms that crossed much of the state of Alabama. I left Mobile in a drizzle that eventually turned into a monsoon. I had to completely leave the I-65 at the Evergreen exit in order to feel somewhat safe. I consulted with the Montgomery PD and agreed with their advice to cancel the event without a rain date. I have forwarded plans to Roy for next years Ride in to be held on the first Saturday in May each year as a district wide event annually. We as motorcycle riders can not bring attention to this deadly problem unless we are ready to sacrifice a little bit of our own time to champion the cause. I wish to thank also Kay Leonard; Leo Mechler and Danny Daniels for getting the word out about the cancellation, and of course Roy and Anita Fosnight our District Director's for their support it is because of folks like these our district is so great.
Until Next Month

Here you go, another month of exciting data to help you grow your District membership. Keep up the great work.
The task at hand is two fold and both are very important. One is to contact each and every new member. The other is to contact each and every member on the Expiring Dues list. If everyone sat back and did nothing while all of the above members on the expiring dues list let there membership expire, our region membership would drop by 1,339. You can see what similar "non-action" by each of your districts would do.
A personal telephone call has been proven as the best method to get new GWRRA members active with local chapters and also keep members in our chapter families.
This was put out by Bob & Karla Greer, Region 'A' MEC.
It is good advice for the chapters as well as District.

To all the moms, we hope you had a wonderful Mother's Day and for all you dads, we hope you will have a great Father's Day.
We have been busy visiting several Fundays this month with Chapter's B & N. All the Fundays were a lot of fun with good food and good friends. Don't forget to make plans for the South Picnic at Roland State Park in Camden, Al. on May 31st. We hope to see plenty of chapters attending. We hope everyone is making plans to attend Georgia State rally on June 12 to 15. We have been busy trying let me emphasize trying to put together a toga. This rally should be a blast. It was fantastic last year.
Chapters don't forget that you have until June 30th to select your Couple of the year. We would like for every chapter in Alabama to have a couple of the year. It doesn't matter if your chapter is small. I know each chapter has that special couple. Chapter couple of the year can do as much as they feel comfortable in participating. Remember this is an honor not a job. If your couple decides to participate at the state level, give them the support and encouragement for them to succeed. We hope to see several couples participating at the state level in January 2009 at the Snowball Rally in Montgomery.
We would like to express our thank you to Jim and Karen Lee for all the hard work they have done with the Alabama rallies in Mobile. We wish them well and look forward to seeing them soon. As everyone should be aware of now the 2009 Alabama District Rally will be held in Pelham AL. [That is in our back yard]. Plans are under way as we speak to make sure that this will be a GREAT rally. Wing Ding is right around the corner. We hope everyone is planning to attend. For those of you who have never been to a Wing Ding, all I can say this will be your chance to say WOW!!
Chapter Y has announced they will be giving away the traveling plaque at the southern region picnic so come and get it.
Lyn & I will be sharing a booth at Alabaster's City Fest on Sat. June 7th with Bill & Joyce Smith (Chapter X CD). Bill and Joyce will be promoting the Ride for Kids and we will be handing out brochures for the GWRRA and for our District Rally. We will have several bikes & Trikes on display also. Come on down and see us.
See ya soon,
Lynn & Lyn Edwards
WOW!! What fun we have been having since our selection at the Alabama Rally! It started off when we headed south to Samson, AL and Chapter G's fun day. What a great time we had. We also learned some new games that we will not elaborate on right now. Just check the AL web site for pictures, thank you Doyce & Diane for a great day. That same day we made it back home in time for our home Chapter N's monthly gathering. It was good to see everyone there and thanks for the welcome they give us. A special thanks to Bill & Trina for the nice gift that they gave us.
The following Monday had us at the Rainbow City council meeting presenting a proclamation to the council on Motorcycle Awareness Month. Then it was off to chapter Y in Birmingham to help capture the traveling plaque. Thanks Chapter Y for a wonderful time. Next up was Chapter T's fun day and as usual it was a fun time. Our grand daughter RaeRae jumped and played till she was wore out. Frank and Linda and Chapter T members thank you for the fun.
The first of May saw us heading to the South Carolina Rally. Alabama won largest district in attendance. Way to go guys. We stepped in for Roy & Anita and came in 2nd in the District challenge. We had a great time and thanks to Carl & Donna and the rest of the South Carolina staff for putting on a wonderful rally. Barbie had to attend Chapter B's fun day alone while I was on a 1,000 mile bun burner ride. We both had a great time but I was a little more tired than she was. Thanks you John & Elizabeth and all of Chapter B for a great time. Well that about catches us up to the present. We still have plans to visit the rest of the chapters and also attend some District and Region Rallies, and of course Wing Ding. We look forward to seeing everyone some where down the road. Ride Safe.
Terry & Barbie Cleveland
Chapter Y will be giving the traveling plaque away May 31st at the Southern Picnic at Rolland State Park in Camden, AL.
Remember the mileage will count as if you came to Birmingham (Trussville) to get it. So southern chapters make plans and come get.
